Professional Software Engineering
IDS uses proven professional software engineering methodology for all
the work it executes on behalf of clients – from the initial
assessment phases, through implementation, to handling support
and maintenance once new functionality has been deployed.
- Our Software Engineers work directly with an organization’s
personnel so as to gain an in-depth understanding of the processes
to be optimized.
- IDS will provide a budgetary estimate, so a potential client can
evaluate costs and benefits of a project with a minimum up-front time
investment of time.
- Once a budgetary estimate is approved, IDS develops a detailed specification
of the work to be delivered and provides the client with formal quotation.
- Projects are structured so as to afford clients with opportunities
to review progress throughout the life of the development process,
which allows any unforeseen workflow issues and possible enhancements
to be addressed early, thereby reducing overall costs and ensuring

Configurator Development
Configurators are software solutions that automate components of the
engineered-to-order product design process. There are two primary types
of configurators.
- Sales Oriented
Sales oriented configurators are generally client-facing,
and include a web-based interface that allows potential customers
to define particular product configurations. Users are typically
provided with ballpark pricing quotes and presentation
quality renderings as outputs. Sales oriented configurators
can make the front end of the sales process more efficient and can
serve to differentiate a company from its competitors.
- Engineering Automation
Engineering Automation focused configurators are designed
to reduce repetitive engineering activity and standardize
business practices. They are often integrated directly into engineering
software products (AutoCAD, Inventor, etc) and can serve as a bridge
to downstream systems.

VBA to .NET Migration
With the release of the 2010 product line, Autodesk announced that
it had begun the process of transitioning its products from VBA to .NET
and recommended that all VBA users migrate to .NET. For users with existing
VBA-based customization, this situation presents both challenges and
opportunities. IDS Engineering can not only help an organization “future-proof” its
existing custom functionality, but can also implement new features as
part of a migration project.
Like most software engineering activities, a migration project begins
with an assessment process. Utilizing screen sharing technologies, IDS
Engineering’s software engineering team works directly with an
organization in order to gain a complete understanding of an existing
application, and then based on a thorough review of the application’s
current VBA codebase, IDS provides a professional recommendation as
to the optimal migration strategy.
At the completion of a migration project, a client will receive Windows
based installers that allow for quick and easy deployment of the updated
application and will be provided with the complete .NET based source
code. In the event a client wishes to maintain and extend the application
using its own personnel in the future, customized one-on-one training
is available to clients that want a primer on the migrated version of
the application and general .NET development. Once IDS Engineering has
ported an application it software engineering staff will be available
to provide on-going consulting services ranging from the implementation
of new functionality to end-user assistance.
